After the Napoleonic wars the shape of the infantry shako was changed to a shape that was wider at the top, a shape influenced by the continental armies. This brass badge was placed on the front with the imitation scales reaching the top but partly covered by a black cockade which also covered the socket for the plume. The domed badge was surrounded by white lace to resemble a rosette. Most regiments had their number in Arabic numerals but the 9th Regiment had Britannia over IX.
