The bell-shaped pattern of shako adopted after 1816 to replace the ‘Waterloo’ shako allowed regiments to have more distinctive badge designs. The regimental badge of Britannia had been worn on the mens’ shakos during the Peninsula War, for which the regiment earned the battle honour inscribed on the scroll above the figure. The figure of Britannia appears on badges and belt plates of the 9th Foot in a variety of ways. This silver figure is armed with a spear but has no helmet. She holds a laurel branch and has an oval shield with a Union flag design. The gilt domed badge is topped by a Hanoverian crown.
