The fortified town of Athlone sits in a valley astride the River Shannon which can be seen flowing from the right. A battle is taking place in the foreground which probably represents the action that took place inside Athlone as the regimental history doesn’t mention fighting outside the town. Ginkel’s artillery is in the left foreground, and a square redoubt is just forward of that. Infantry can be seen in assault trenches, one just in front of the redoubt, and another just above the action in the foreground leading to the main entrance to Athlone.
