The shell jacket worn in the 1866 photo of Ensign Clogstoun is worn as a mess jacket by this officer. It is open at the front with the lapels folded back revealing a quilted lining. The jacket is scarlet with yellow pointed cuffs edged in white. The waistcoat is decorated with gold braid formed into small circles around the edge. The cuffs are dark because of the photographic process, but they are yellow and it would be reasonable to assume that the waistcoat is also yellow. However, another photo of an officer taken some years earlier shows a similar waistcoat, also dark, but the cuffs of the mess jacket are pale.
The undress forage cap is blue cloth with a black silk cap-band that has an oak-leaf pattern. The two embroidered badges are Britannia over the number 9. The trousers are either Oxford mixture for the winter or Oxford Mixture tartan serge for the summer.
