The undress uniform worn by this junior officer consists of a close-fitting scarlet shell jacket that has a yellow collar and cuffs. The regiment is easily identified because of his forage cap which has an embroidered Britannia badge over the 9.The facings appear very dark because of the orthochromatic photographic emulsions used on the glass plates. The date of the photo is not known but was taken in the 1860s. The 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 9th served in the Ionian Islands until 1864. The officer in this photo is named as Ensign Thornton Clogstoun who served in the 2nd Battalion from June 1861. The officer wears a black mourning band on his left arm which may date the photo as 1865-66. In those years the 2nd Battalion was stationed in Hong Kong and Kowloon. They suffered from the unhealthy season so that from Feb 1865 to March 1866 the following had died: 2 officers, 53 other ranks, 6 women and 32 children.
