Sergeants’ tunics were of better quality than the rank-and-file. This sergeant appears to have white chevrons on his right sleeve, indicating that he is not a senior NCO in which case he would have gold lace stripes and gold lace on his cuffs. The yellow facings are shown as dark in this photo because of the technique used, different from the process used in the photo of the lieutenant. The sergeant’s cuffs have white bastion-shaped button-holes and three brass buttons. The shoulder straps were also yellow, edged white, with 9 embroidered in red. He wears a blue undress peakless forage cap with a brass number 9 on the front. Sergeants generally wore their crimson sash of office on the right shoulder while officers wore theirs on the left.
