The red infantry coat was radically altered in 1797 so that it closed all the way down from neck to waist. The first pattern was longer, reaching below waist level, but in the early years of the 19th century it was waist level with short tails at the back. It was now a jacket, fastened with buttons (which have been removed from this example). The lace is in the 9th Regiment pattern, white with two thin black lines. This lace is doubled and placed in pairs down the front, on the cuffs, and on the false pockets at the back. The shoulders have yellow straps with small tufted ends which signify a battalion company. The yellow collar is very tall, now a stand collar instead of turned-down. The collar has an indistinct edging in these photos, but examples from other regiments show a slim line of lace, in some cases the lace is single instead of double, as seen on the white turn-backs of this jacket.
