This portrait is of an officer of the 9th Regiment, named as Nicholas Delacherois. He was the grandson of a Huguenot officer exiled from France who fought in the Williamite war in Ireland. Nicholas was born in 1736 and served in the 9th from 1756 to 1776. The uniform is post-1768 when the style was changed. He was a captain-lieutenant on 12 Dec 1770 and a captain on 1 Sep 1771. He experienced active service in Havanna in 1762 and was part of a battalion made up of light companies.
His scarlet coat has yellow lapels and turn-down collar. The round cuffs are also yellow and adorned with silver buttons and silver lace buttonholes. There is also silver lace on both lapels, and one on each side of his collar. The epaulette on his right shoulder is silver. The waistcoat is probably white or pale buff. There is a tricorn hat resting near his right arm. This has no lace edge and has a black cockade on the side. The portrait was published in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research vol LI no. 205 (Spring 1973) along with excerpts from his correspondence.
