The cap worn by men of the grenadier company was changed from the embroidered mitre cap to this fur cap with metal plate on the front. This was a universal pattern, not regimental. Officers had a similar pattern but of better quality. The back of the cap had a red cloth part embroidered with a flaming grenade and number 9 in white.
The crowned lion standing on a Hanoverian crown is the royal crest, shown as sitting on a medieval helmet. King George III’s G and R are either side and the 3 part scroll has the motto NEC ASPERA TERRENT the Hanoverian motto meaning ‘We are not afraid of difficulties’. This motto was also embroidered on the mitre caps along with the White Horse of Hanover, worn by grenadiers of infantry regiments since the accession of George I in 1715.
