This illustration by the late Bob Marrion is a reconstruction of a musketeer of Colonel Steuart’s Regiment of Foot at the time of the civil war in Ireland. The uniform was described as red lined orange which meant that the facings, in this case the cuffs, were orange. Somewhat hidden by his left arm is the shoulder-belt with what looks like the hanging cartridges, sometimes called the Twelve Apostles. It also supported a priming flask and bullet bag. When the musket was a matchlock, a slow burning match was carried. But by the 1690s the matchlock was being replaced by the flintlock and the Apostles were replaced by a cartridge containing a bullet and charge, with a paper end that had to be bitten off.
