This fine example of a Highland officer’s dirk was sold at Bonhams along with a portrait of Captain George Scovell who served in the 79th Cameron Highlanders from 1853. The details on Bonhams’ website are:
The 35cm double fullered blade with faceted back edge, etched to one side with stand of arms above thistles, 79 crown and VR cypher, the opposite side etched with battle honours from Egmont op Zee to Waterloo. The grip is ebonised baluster carved with basket weave set with brass studs, the rear with crossed swords and bonnet. The mounts are embossed and chased with thistles. The pommel is embossed and chased with oak leaves and acorns, set with a piece of faceted glass against red foil. The scabbard is wood-lined, covered in black leather with mounts embossed and chased with thistles and lilies. At the top of the scabbard the number 79 is surrounded by oak leaves and a knife and fork, also with carved handles, are tucked into pockets embossed with gilt floral designs.
