Officer’s dirks in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders were elaborate and expensive items, slung from an ornately embroidered belt. The pattern remained similar throughout the life of the 79th and this example, manufactured by Anderson & Son, from the Michael D Long website shows a 20th century dirk worn by Brigadier Ian Colin Cameron who commanded the 2nd Battalion during WW1.
The blade is 28cm long with a faceted back edge and two grooves. The baluster-shaped handle is carved ebonised wood with brass studs. The gilt decorations and knife and fork can be seen clearly in separate detailed images.
