Adam Scott-Elliot joined the 79th as a 2nd lieutenant on 23 Oct 1880, promoted to lieutenant on 1 July 1881. He served throughout the war in Egypt in 1882, including Tel-el-Kebir. He also took part in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85, and the operations in the Sudan in 1885-86 as commander of the Cameron Highlanders division of the Camel Corps. He was present at the battle of Ginnis. He was promoted to captain on 22 Oct 1890 and major on 10 May 1898. On 9 March 1905 he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and given command of the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was given a brevet of colonel on 9 Mar 1908 and relinquished command in 1909.
He was married to Margaret Pirie Evans. They had two daughters, Aline Margaret and Isabel Louisa. They lived in London and Norfolk. The portrait (see below) was painted by Annie Louisa Swynnerton ARA in 1912. and can be seen in Manchester Art Gallery.
