Malcolm Stewart Riach was born in 1860, the son of Malcolm Stewart Riach. He entered the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders on 23 Jan 1883 and served with them in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85 and the Sudan Frontier Field Force of 1885-86. He was present at Kosheh during its investment and was staff officer at Kosheh during the battle of Ginnis. He was promoted to captain on 7 Dec 1891 and major 2 Nov 1898. He was appointed commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion on 3 April 1906 and awarded a brevet of colonel on 3 April 1909. He relinquished command in April 1910.
He married Marion Alexandra Gertrude Hall and they had three sons, Stewart (1892-1929), Ronald (1893-1940) and Nigel (1899-1918). They lived at the Grange, Charlcombe, Somerset. Colonel Riach died on 25 April 1941. The photo shows him in the rank of major c1898 wearing the dress levée uniform of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and medals for service in Egypt.
