The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders

The Great Redan

The Highlanders do not feature in this print but the Russian Redan situated outside Sevastopol is depicted as a small fortress damaged by artillery fire allowing the British infantry access to the defenders. There are trenches in front of the gun battery which are probably the parallels that were occupied by reserve troops such as the Highland Brigade. A Union flag can be seen on the parapet of the Redan which is creating a tussle with the defenders who try to pull it down. The assault was unsuccessful on 8 Sep but overnight the Redan was evacuated. The print was published by Read & Co on 25 Sep 1855. The image comes from the Brown Digital Repository.
