This gouache painting by Jack Challenor, painted in 1938, shows the ceremonial uniform worn after WW1. The rank of sergeant piper had been applied to the chief piper since 1881 but the title Pipe-Major was restored in 1928. This warrant officer has a sergeant’s crimson sash worn under the Cameron of Erracht tartan shoulder plaid so that the tassels hang on his right hip. The green doublet has gold lace on the collar, cuffs and shoulder wings as before but also has gold braid on the edges of his Inverness skirts. The only white piping to be seen is down the front of the doublet. It is fastened with round brass buttons, not white metal diamond-shaped buttons as before the war. His rank stripes have an embroidered crown above the point.The painting comes from the Brown Digital Repository.
