Pipe banners were attached to the brass drone of the bagpipes for each of the pipers, and carried on ceremonial occasions. The pattern carried by the 79th Cameron Highlanders was distinguished by a small Union flag in the upper canton, showing on both sides. The banner was green with a central device of the regimental number in Roman numerals surrounded by a wreath of thistles. It was shaped like a guidon as carried by the light cavalry but had no battle honours at this stage.
