Pipers’ Sporran and Hose 1847

Auguste Raffet’s sketches, copied by Cecil Lawson, include this study of the sporran worn by the pipers of the 79th, observed while they were stationed at Gibraltar in 1847. The brass cantle has the regimental number in Roman numerals and the brown goat's hair has five black tassels. The pipers’ hose were supported by garters of red ribbon tied in a complicated bow. A skean dhu can be seen tucked into the right-hand hose.
