The Cameron and Seaforth Highlanders are firing on the charging Dervish army behind defences consisting mostly of a fence of thorn bushes, the zeriba. This contemporary illustration appears to be based on a sketch by an eye-witness present at the battle of Omdurman on 2 Sep 1898. The men lying down have ammunition boxes so it seems that they are reloading the magazines of the Lee Metford rifles.
