The island of Martinique, in the Lesser Antilles, the West Indian Islands bordering the eastern side of the Caribbean, was captured from the French in March 1794 and occupied by the British until the Peace of Amiens, then returned to France in 1802. This print shows St Pierre in 1776, on the northwest coast of the island.
