George was, like his father, the second son of the King and Queen, born at Sandringham on 14 Dec 1895. He was named Albert Frederick Arthur George, known as Bertie, and in 1920 was made Duke of York. On 1 July 1920 he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 4th (Territorial) Battalion, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. His father died on 20 Jan 1936 and the Prince of Wales became King Edward VIII. But he abdicated on 11 Dec 1936, succeeded by Bertie to become King George VI. His appointment as Colonel-in-Chief of the Cameron Highlanders dates from 11 Dec 1936 and he held the post until his death on 6 Feb 1952. The photo shows him in the dress uniform of the regiment.
