George was the second son of the Prince and Princess of Wales who later became King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. He was born in London on 3 June 1865 named George Frederick Ernest Albert. He was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders on 12 Nov 1902 while he was himself the Prince of Wales. His elder brother, Albert Victor, had died in 1892 and George succeeded to the throne on 6 May 1910, remaining Colonel-in-Chief until his death on 20 Jan 1936.
