The Duke of York’s second attempt on the Batavian Republic, and their French Revolutionary allies, was more successful but ended in a stalemate. The army sailed from Ramsgate in June 1799 and landed at the Helder, the entrance to the Zuyder Zee. The painting, by Dirk Lengendyck shows the British landing on the beach and unloading stores. An action is taking place on the right of the picture, but it is generally accepted that the landing was unopposed. After landing, a portion of the Scottish brigade, including the 79th was selected to garrison the forts and batteries at Helder Point which had been evacuated by the enemy. On 10 Sep they marched to Schagen and encamped, and on 18 Sep joined the army near Hoorn. The battle at Egmont-op-Zee took place on 2 October.
