William Heath produced this print in 1827 while the 79th Cameron Highlanders were serving in Quebec. The print depicts a flank officer of the Cameron Highlanders in dress uniform, standing over a wounded French drummer. His men, in the background, are in neat ranks, kneeling and standing, firing their muskets. The officer’s uniform is drawn correctly with fine detail, although the front of his jacket should show the gold lace laid on wide green lapels instead of scarlet. Heath produced several prints of British officers in expensive and impractical uniforms, fashionable in the 1820s, in poses that glorified the victories over Napoleon’s armies.
