The garrison of Fort Kosheh built defences with sandbags. There was also a zeriba, a defensive position constructed with thorn bushes, built on the west bank of the Nile. The fort itself is on the east bank, but the river looks very wide in this photo so contact with the other side appears to be almost impossible. The zeriba was defended by 150 men of the 9th Sudanese Battalion, Egyptian Army. After hostilities ceased, the Cameron Highlanders presented the 9th Sudanese with a Colour, but the battalion was disbanded in 1930 and the Colour is now in the Regimental Museum.
