Ismailia, on the left of the map, is about half way along the Suez Ship Canal, on a small lake, Timsa. Wolseley’s force marched west along the line of the railway and Freshwater canal, making their first halt at Magfar at 9pm where they stayed the night. But as some men had succumbed to the heat, marching was confined to night-time after that. They halted for the day at Tel-el-Maskhuta, and at 5pm moved on to Mahsama which they reached at 10pm. A halt was made until 4am when they marched on to Kassassin, arriving at 8am on 12 Sep. They received tents and rested for the impending night march and battle at Tel-el-Kebir.
