Edward William Cuming (or Cumming) was born in Dublin on 29 April 1825. He joined the 79th as an ensign on 24 July 1846. He served in the Crimean War, at Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol. He was in the assaults of 18 June 1855 and 8 Sep, as well as the expeditions to Kertch and Yenikale. His medals include the Order of the Medjidie 5th Class, the Crimean Medal with three clasps and the Turkish medal. He commanded the 79th from August 1878 to June 1881.
Colonel Cuming lived at Crover, County Cavan, Ireland. He was married to Julia Cuming, they had a son, Colonel Robert John Cuming OBE DSO and a daughter, Katharine Ella Cuming. He died in March 1899.
