Drum majors had been a feature of regimental life since the early days of the British Army. They had traditionally been dressed very grandly to provide a spectacle when marching ahead of the band and corps of drums. The drum major in this illustration by Douglas Anderson is in the full dress ceremonial uniform with scarlet doublet. His rank is shown as four gold stripes point upward on his right arm, with a crown above. For less formal occasions he would wear a doublet of archer green. The collar and shoulder wings are edged and stripped with gold lace, as is the embroidered sash, or baldric, on his left shoulder which is partly covered with emblazoned battle honours.
Elements of the Cameron Highlanders have been retained after 1961 when the regiment amalgamated with the Seaforth Highlanders. The tartan is in the sett of Cameron of Erracht even though the rest of the regiment wore the Seaforth tartan as seen on the officer next to him. The blue facings are those of the Camerons and the sporran is based on the pattern worn previously by the Camerons.
