Pipes and Drums 1915

The 4th Battalion QO Cameron Highlanders were warned for service in France in 1914 but an outbreak of measles delayed their departure until February 1915. This photo was taken in France in 1915, showing, from the left, the drum major (still called sergeant-drummer as from 1881, restored to drum-major in 1926). Next to him is the pipe-major with four stripes on his forearm, and there are four other pipers. The bass drummer is accompanied by four other drummers. They are all in khaki Highland tunics and Tam O’Shanter caps. The sporrans have been replaced by more practical canvas purses.
