The regimental bandmaster was more of a professional musician than a soldier, but Bandmaster Abbot seems to have excelled at soldierly smartness. The plaid worn officer-style across his chest is neatly pleated whereas other photos of officers show less precision with the plaid. He is not actually an officer, but is ranked as a Warrant Officer Class 1, equal to the RSM. His scarlet tunic has gold lace on the collar and cuffs, and gold braid button-hole loops on his cuffs and skirt flaps. There are gold plaited shoulder cords and he does not have wings on his shoulders like the band musicians. Also his belt is white whereas the bandsmen had a black belt. The band badge on his right forearm is embroidered with gold and his thistle & crown collar badges are also embroidered. He has two medals for the South African War. In review order he would wear the feather bonnet but here he has the undress glengarry cap with a badge on a silk backing.
