Bandsmen wore red doublets after 1871, initially with green facings, but changed after 1873 to blue. They were distinguished by wings on the shoulders. The collar, cuffs and wings were blue and the doublet was not decorated with lace like the drummers. The band continued with the custom of wearing the plaid as a scarf, across the chest. He has a black waist-belt instead of white like the rank-and-file. He is kilted and has a dark sporran with two white tassels and a black cantle with silver badge. His instrument is a heavy brass sousaphone.
