This figure is part of a composite painting of men of the Cameron Highlanders through the ages, by Richard Simkin, painted c1890, so the drummer is not contemporary. The uniform is basically correct except that there should be patterned lace around the top of the green cuffs. The shoulder wings should be the same as in the MacIan painting of 1852, but Simkin has made the repeating pattern larger. This figure is in the role of drummer, there being no sign of a bugle. The drum is slung from a plain white drum carriage and another belt can be seen on his right shoulder to carry his short sword. Simkin has given the drum a decoration that is probably incorrect as the drums at that time were still plain brass according to the Holyrood painting. The kilt is worn without a sporran which would get in the way of the drum. His feather bonnet has a diced headband and a white hackle on the left side.
