This Simkin painting is based on a figure in the MacIan painting of the regiment in the grounds of Holyrood House. The artist used photos to paint all the figures, including officers, NCOs, musicians, drummers and even a mascot stag. The painting is reproduced below. The drum major differs from the Raffet paintings of 1847 in that the embroidered sash on his left shoulder is green instead of red, and the ornamental drumsticks are placed either side of the regimental badge. He has a sergeant's crimson sash beneath this, with the tassel showing on his right hip. On his right shoulder is a white belt with a belt plate concealed by the sash. This belt holds a broadsword behind his left hip. His jacket is red with green facings, silver lace and buttons. The shoulder wings do not have a fringed edge. The four silver rank stripes on each upper arm are point downwards and have a drum badge above. The mace is similar to the one shown in the Raffet paintings but has a silver figure on top, of St Andrew with his cross. Simkin has differed from the Holyrood painting with his depiction of the sporran. He has put six white tassels instead of five black ones.
