The two views of this band musician show how the full plaid was worn in the band of the 79th Cameron Highlanders. The tails at the back of the white jacket reveal green turn-backs and plain white false pockets without lace but with four buttons in pairs. The buttons are brass but the collar lace and epaulettes are silver. His kilt and sporran conform to the ones worn by the rank and file, and his black waist-belt supports a dirk. The feather bonnet is tall and worn with a white hackle. Black ribbons worn at the back are about 8 inches long.
The instrument he holds is a basonore made in France in the first half of the 19th century to a custom specification for use in military bands. The paintings are by Cecil Lawson copied from sketches by Auguste Raffet at Gibraltar in 1847.
