The back and front view clearly show the uniform of the drum major in review order. Although he would march ahead of the band and corps of drums, he wears a red uniform like the drummers, not white like the band. His jacket is unique to him, having green facings and silver lace, with fringed wings instead of the large padded crescents worn by the drummers. His buttons are silver whereas all other members of the regiment had brass (gilt in the case of the officers). His rank is shown on each forearm as four silver chevrons, point downwards.
The details of his drum-major’s sash are described in the previous image, Musician and Drum Major Details 1847. His kilt and plaid are in the Cameron of Erracht tartan, the back view showing how it hangs from the left shoulder and tucks up into his waist. The sporran is of brown goat’s hair with five black tassels and a brass cantle inscribed with LXXIX, attached to him with a plain black belt. His hose are green and red check worn with scarlet garters tied in an elaborate bow, and black shoes with a silver buckle. The paintings are by Cecil Lawson, copied from the sketches of the artist Auguste Raffet who observed the 79th Cameron Highlanders when they were stationed at Gibraltar in 1847.
