The Cameron Highlanders served in the Egyptian campaign during the 1880s including the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882. In 1880 they were in Gibraltar and for their service there and in Egypt and the Sudan they needed a white tropical helmet in dress uniform to replace the ostrich feather bonnet. This rare helmet was sold at auction by DNW in September 2018 for 3,000 pounds with the original badge which is a gilt star of universal pattern but having the crowned thistle in the centre, in silver on purple velvet, with 79 in silver at the base of the Garter.
