British Empire Title

The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders

Aboukir

Philip de Loutherbourg painted this scene from eye-witness accounts. It does not show the Highlanders but gives a good idea of the effort and determination involved in storming the heights after disembarking from the boats. At least two figures are recognisable, Sir Sidney Smith is on the left with outstretched arm, and the officer in a red coat, pointing, is Major-General Coote. The painting is 153cm wide and was photographed in August 2023 at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Queen Street, Edinburgh.
