Two men near the centre of the photo are in dress uniform wearing the 1855 pattern double-breasted doublet adopted by highland regiments to replace the tailed jacket. The central figure may be a corporal as he does not have a sergeant's crimson sash. He is in marching order with a knapsack or valise on his back with covered mess-tins on top. He holds a percussion musket and has a bayonet on his left hip. An ammunition pouch can be seen at the back just below his waist. It is attached to the white leather belt on his left shoulder. His feather bonnet is protected with a waterproof cover.
The sergeant second from the left wears trews with a white drill jacket. The rest wear kilts with a recently altered sporran that has two white horsehair tassels instead of the five small black tassels previously. The cantle is black with a silver regimental badge. The man on the right of the photo is a musician, perhaps a band sergeant. His rank is high enough for him to wear a sword. His tunic, or doublet, cannot be seen clearly but it is white with green facings.
