Lille, an important French city situated in the northeast corner of the country, was the strongest fortress in Europe, protected by an almost impregnable bastioned wall. This painting of the 1708 siege by John Wootton was created in 1742 which would explain why the Duke of Marlborough appears to be dressed 30 years ahead of his time.
