Fort Washington, situated on the heights on the left of this painting, commanded the passage of ships on the Hudson River. On the other bank was Fort Lee. This painting, by Dominic Serres the Elder, shows British ships, HMS Phoenix, Roebuck and Tartar, along with smaller vessels forcing their way through a cheval-de-frise, under fire from the two forts.
