This Gallaghers cigarette card of 1899 shows the post-1881 pattern Regimental Colour as it should have looked. The facings of the Lincolns changed to white in 1881 and the Regimental Colour was ordered to be changed to this design. The wreath of laurel surrounding the central Union wreath displays eleven battle honours with the 12th honour, the Sphinx and EGYPT at the base of the badge. Up until 1899 the regiment had the following battle honours: EGYPT (the Sphinx), PENINSULA, PUNJAUB, MOOTLAN, GOOJERAT, LUCKNOW, BLENHEIM, RAMILLIES, OUDENARDE, MALPLAQUET, ATBARA and KHARTOUM.
The centre of the Colour has the post-1881 title: LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT and the regimental badge of the Sphinx in the middle. This would show that the regiment were allowed to display their badge on the Colour despite an order of 1747 that required most regiments to show only the regimental number. This was only overturned officially in 1930. Simkin’s print of the Colour Party 1891 confirms that the regiment carried this pattern Colour.
