This pattern replaced the plate worn on the shako. The star, wreath and crown were the universal style for the infantry, and the garter was inscribed HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. The regimental silver Sphinx was central to the design, on a black velvet base. The title of the regiment was placed on a silver scroll below the garter. This pattern was adopted in 1878 when the helmet replaced the shako, however, this example dates from 1902 when the King’s crown replaced Queen Victoria’s crown following her death on 22 January 1901.
