The unique pattern belt plate was a distinction of the 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment at the turn of the 19th century. It is a simple horseshoe shape with 10 in the dotted circle. This miniature is dated c1805 but a portrait of an officer dated 1798 reproduced in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research Vol LI no.206 (Summer 1973) has a similar design but with more pointed ends to the horseshoe. The author of the article mentions a rough sketch of a coat as worn in a portrait of Captain H Calthorp, who served with the 10th from 1805 to 1812. This shows the coat buttoned up to the throat…The belt plate again consists of the crescent bearing the number 10 within a ring. Another miniature of a grenadier officer of the 10th dated c1801 also shows a belt plate of the same pattern.
