The 10th served in the Sikh Wars of the 1840s and adapted their service dress to the local conditions. The forage cap was covered with a white cover which had a curtain for the back of the neck. The red quilted frock coat was made of cotton or serge; it was worn over the waist-length shell jacket which had a yellow collar and pointed cuffs. The front was fastened with hooks and eyes but decorated with small regimental buttons which the 1845 Dress Regulations stipulates as being evenly spaced or in pairs. The trousers are light grey without the usual red stripe. He has a telescope in a leather case slung from the left shoulder and a black leather waist-belt. The sword is in a brass scabbard, indicating his senior regimental officer status. It is attached to slings for mounted duty although his lack of spurs suggests that he is on dismounted duty. Captains and subalterns had a black leather scabbard with gilt mountings.
