Percy was assigned to work with the 7th battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. The orders given to Percy read:
14. MACHINE GUNS.
a. Machine Gun Corps will co-operate with the Battalion finally covering 2nd objective.
b. A machine gun barrage will be put down prior to the attack.
