British Empire Trade

This fascinating painting by Hugh Williams nicely illustrates the importance of trade and particularly of the maritime variety to the British Empire. Ships linked the various colonies back to the metropolis and goods travelled in both directions - usually raw materials coming to Britain and finished goods going in the opposite direction. But over time, the trade became more and more sophisticated.
