Cromwell Settlement Map

This map shows the Cromwellian plan to move Catholic and Confederate landholders westwards and away from the strategically important parts of the island. They were also to be surrounded with what were regarded as ultra-loyal constituencies in order to help prevent rebellions or revolts from breaking out or to be put down rapidly. The consequence of this internal exile was to help make Western Ireland in general into a bastion of Gaelic Irish heritage and culture whilst much of the rest of Ireland was exposed to more Anglicised cultural norms.
