Hawkins's Maidenland

This map was published in 1776 by the British. It is however a composite map based on a Spanish 1769 map by Don Juan de la Cruz Cano y Olmedilla of the Royal Academy of St. Fernando and then supplemented by information from Bougainville and the British surveys surrounding the establishment of the settlement at Port Egmont. It shows nicely just how far apart the British settlement at Port Egmont was from the French settlement at Port Louis. It also shows the surveying mission of the Jason which clearly shows its entering Berkeley Sound where the French settlement of St Louis was located. This map also accurately records the variety of names used for the islands over the years.
