Konak Court Of Justice, Nicosia 1882

This contemporary watercolour is signed W.W. and dated 1882. The image, taken from the Brown Digital Repository is titled ‘Entrance to Konak (Court of Justice), Nikosia’ and shows a building which probably no longer exists. The decoration around the gateway can be seen to be in need of repair and the sentry box is leaning over. The soldiers are wearing the uniform of West Indian troops although the sleeveless jacket is normally red and the native troops from the West Indies did not have moustaches as seen here. The Konak is mentioned in the biography of General Andrew Wauchope as the place where he dispensed justice during his time as governor of the Paphos region in Cyprus. Presumably there was a 'Konak' in each of the main cities in Cyprus, including Paphos, Larnaca, Famagusta, Limassol and Kyrenia as well as the capital, Nicosia.
