Sir Charles Anthony King-Harman KCMG

Charles Anthony King-Harman was an Irishman, born on 26 April 1851, the son of Hon. Lawrence Harman King-Harman and grandson of Robert Edward King, 1st Viscount Lorton, and brother of Edward Robert King-Harman MP. He studied at Cambridge and entered the Colonial Service in 1874, serving in the Bahamas, Cyprus and Barbados, and then was appointed Colonial Secretary in Mauritius from 1893 to 97. He administered in St Lucia from 1897 to 1900, was Governor of Sierra Leone from 1900 to 1904. His appointment as High Commissioner of Cyprus was held between 1904 and 1911. He was married on 12 July 1888, to Constance Biddulph, daughter of General Sir Robert Biddulph. He was invested as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1900. Sir Charles died on 17 April 1939.

It seems that King-Harman was an unusually thoughtful High Commissioner. In ‘A History of Cyprus’ by Katia Hadjidemetriou, the British administration is mostly blamed for lack of understanding for the Cypriot people but the author names those officials that bucked the trend:

‘..There were however, British officials, like the High Commissioner, Walter Sendall (1892-98) and King-Harman (1904-11) as well as the Colonial Secretary [Captain Charles] Orr and Chief Justice Tyser, who regarded the Cypriot people with respect and sympathy.’

The granddaughter of Charles Orr has kindly allowed us to publish his memoirs here
